The Family Institute aims to co-create with clients, students and colleagues a context for learning about and practicing Psychotherapy and Consultation through developing sustainable and creative communities of practice. We are interested in promoting the wellbeing of individuals, families and communities. We seek to uphold the highest standard of ethical and professional practice and welcome people from all backgrounds, identities and abilities.
The Family Institute was established in 1969 and for many years operated under the auspices of Barnardos. It became known internationally as The Family Institute Cardiff. On 1st April 2001 the Institute joined the University of Glamorgan now the University of South Wales.
The Family Institute played an important part in the early pioneering development of family therapy and systemic psychotherapy in the UK and further afield in Europe, Australia, New Zealand and the United States.
The Staff of The Family Institute continues to contribute through its Research Projects, Connections and Links and other collaborations, to the development of practice, teaching methods and courses in systemic practice and Psychotherapy and Counselling
